BASIS Update ~ GP4 & GP5

The kids' last two grading periods at BASIS Phoenix Primary flew by so quickly.  The BASIS curriculum allows the kids to learn so many substantial things.   I am always amazed at the concepts that my kids are taught and how fast they pick them up.  This year, I can see such an vast improvement in my kids' reading and writing abilities.

Madilyn's humanities class they observed a bald eagle nest in Pennsylvania.  The kids followed the progression of the nest from when the female laid her eggs all the way through the hatching of the eaglets.  This was a fun activity for the entire family.  We loved checking in on the nest all together to see if the eggs had hatched or how the baby eaglets were surviving.

Here is the link that we followed for a couple of months: Bald Eagle Cam

While conducting this exercise, Madilyn also had to write a five page research paper on eagles.  She loved the whole experience -- from researching to the rough draft to the final draft.  I love that they are teaching this aspect of learning so early in their schooling career.

Aiden's humanities class also worked on building strong writing skills in the last two grading periods.  Aiden was asked to write a book about a subject.  Aiden chose his dogs.  Here is his book:

BASIS Phoenix Primary also believes in a strong reading curriculum.  So, this year, they celebrated "Read Across America Week".  This is an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association that began in 1997 and celebrates the joys of reading.  The school had a ton of fun events for the kids to participate in to celebrate reading.  Here are a couple of the events our kids got to participate in and their respective photos:

  • Literacy Night: We are excited to invite you to campus for a free family evening centered around literacy!

  • Reading Buddies: We will be pairing up our big kids (grades 3-5) with our little kids (grades K-2) for reading buddy time during the school day throughout the week!

  • Dress-up Day (Friday 3/1): On Friday, students, teachers, and admin are encouraged to dress up like their favorite Dr. Seuss character in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday!

In addition to their core subjects in school, the kids really enjoyed learning in their extra-curricular classes as well.  They created fun masterpieces in art.  Learned all about where their classmates are from in Mandarin class.  They observed earthworms and other things in science class.  They played Quidditch in P.E.  They learned about our American government and voting.  They enjoyed "Flashlight Fridays". And the were able to enjoy lunch with Mom and Dad during the Spring Week of Giving.
