Field Trip to Butterfly Wonderland

Madilyn's classroom at preschool took a field trip to Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale this past March. Butterfly Wonderland is an indoor rain forest butterfly pavilion.  All parents are given the opportunity to chaperone and I quickly volunteered (along with my friend Kathleen from California during her visit).  We arrived bright and early at preschool to get all of the kids loaded into the school van and other parents' cars. We then drove across town to the newly opened Butterfly Wonderland.  The first stop once we entered the attraction was a brief 3D movie about the life of a monarch butterfly.  The kids loved it and at many moments during the movie tried to catch the butterflies as they would have the appearance of flying around you.  After the movie, the Wonderland staff move you into a room where you are able to watch the metamorphosis of a butterfly.  I found this exhibit particularly fascinating as I have never watched this occur in real life.  Our third stop was the butterfly pavilion.  As you stepped into the humid environment, you were surrounded by butterflies flying all around you.  The most important item that we kept reminding the kids was to watch where they were walking so they won't step on one of the delicate creatures.  A majority of the kids loved watching and searching for the butterflies.  However, there were a handful that *absolutely* despised butterflies and thought that they were going to get bitten or hurt by them.  They screamed and cried and held on to the adults the entire time.  These kids were the first to move on to the remainder of the Wonderland which included a honey bee hive, a live ant colony, a couple of tanks of fish and a touch pool of stingrays. Our entire visit to Butterfly Wonderland lasted about two hours and the kids made it back to preschool in time for lunch and nap time.  It was the first field trip I chaperoned for one of my kids.  I cannot wait to share in many more of their school activities in the future.

We have had several classes at our school do butterfly studies with a kit. They get the caterpillars and a net cage and some other stuff. The kids get to see them make a cocoon and then emerge from them. After they have all hatched and spent a few days in the cage they let them go. You can also order them to do in your home :)
