Family Road Trip for Fall Break ~ Yellowstone

Wyoming was our next road trip destination.  We rented a ranch house in Freedom, Wyoming, for five days.  We wanted a place that had enough space for us and the dogs, but was also relatively close to Jackson Hole and Yellowstone National Park.  In hindsight, we would have preferred our home base to have been a little closer to town, but this home provided us with spectacular mountain views and a quaint small town feel.

We arrived at our house rental on Sunday evening.  This gave us just enough time to run into Alpine to grab some groceries for dinner and the week.  Here is a snapshot of how we spent the rest of our time in Wyoming.

Monday
  • Drove through Grand Teton National Park to get to Yellowstone National Park
  • Visited Old Faithful and Grand Prismatic Spring
  • Enjoyed a chilly picnic at one of the park's rest areas and the kids played in the snow before heading back down the mountain.
Tuesday
  • Explored the land around the rental house including the river that runs through their property.
  • Hiked the Periodic Intermittent Spring trailhead with the kids and dogs.  It was a really cool hike.  The kids really loved rock and mountain climbing.
  • For dessert, we built a fire outside to roast some marshmallows and eat smores.
Wednesday
  • Drove to Jackson Hole.  Stopped at Delish Donuts on our way for coffee, hot chocolate and mini donuts.  They were so good.
  • On our way to Jackson Hole, we stopped at the Cabin Creek Trailhead to enjoy another family hike.  This one may not have included as many boulders as the kids may have wanted, but they did find ways to still explore things off the beaten path.
  • Lunched and sipped beer at Still West Brewery and Grill.
  • After lunch, we walked and shopped around downtown Jackson Hole.
Thursday
  • Hiked and picnicked the Strawberry Creek Trail.  This trail showcased this area's fall foliage so beautifully.
  • After the hike, we returned back to the house to rest and start packing up for our early Friday morning departure.
  • Enjoyed an early dinner and flight of beer at Melvin Brewing.
  • As we began to play Skip Bo that evening, we received a knock at the door.  Apparently, our rental home had been double booked for Thursday evening.  A family of fifteen were vacationing there for a long weekend.  After trying to figure out the whole situation, we decided that it would just be easier for us (a family of four) to pack up early and start our drive to Utah right then instead of waiting until morning.  We drove for about four hours before checking into a Best Western for the night.
