Family Vacation in Avila Beach, CA

After departing Calabasas on Sunday morning, we started our drive up to Avila Beach.  On our way, we decided to make a couple of stops.  Our first stop was Solvang, CA.  This Danish village is one of our favorite destinations in the Santa Ynez Valley.  It is very close to wine country, but also has some amazing pastries.  We really wanted to introduce the kids to aebleskivers (Danish donut balls).  So good!

Our next stop on the way to our vacation home rental in Avila was Laetitia Vineyard and Winery.  Thankfully, with the updated COVID-19 protocols released earlier in June, we were able to reserve our wine tasting table on the patio.  It was a beautiful day to enjoy some of our favorite pinot noir while the kids had a picnic lunch.

After purchasing some wine bottles for our week-long stay, we finally arrived in at the historic beach house we will be staying at for the rest of the week.  It is called Casa San Miguelito in Avila Beach, CA..  The owners Sara and Ara were such amazing hosts.  They were so attentive and even joined us for Shabbat as Sara is of Jewish descent, too.

For the remainder of the week, we enjoyed everything the area had to offer:

  • Sun and sand everyday.  The kids loved that the beach was only a block away.  They would play in the waves from mid-morning until sundown.
  • Surf lessons.  The kids and Josh took surf lessons.  All three eventually figured out how to get up and ride the wave in on the board.
  • The dog beach.  Harley and Sadie loved it!
  • Hiking.  One morning, we hiked to Smugglers Cave and climbed down to some cool tide pools.
  • Bike riding.  There were some great bike friendly trails and this allowed us to check out more of local restaurants and sites like Avila Valley Barn.
  • Traveling up and down the coast to check out different cities and towns like Morro Bay, Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo (SLO).  While in SLO, we had the opportunity to visit Tolosa Winery and eat dinner with Rose, Ian and Calvin.
  • Breweries.  We had to check out some of the local breweries.
What a great vacation, especially amid the pandemic!  It allowed us to have just a little bit of normalcy in a very weird summer.  Hopefully someday, we will be able to get back to this little gem.
