Shabbat in Calabasas

At the end of June, we decided to escape Arizona and take a much needed vacation.  After much research, we found the perfect destination.  A small little beach town in Central California called Avila Beach.  This particular beach town had not been hugely affected by COVID-19.  In fact, at the time of our arrival, the COVID-19 cases in San Luis Obispo County had only topped 700 confirmed cases in comparison to 45,000 in Maricopa County. Plus, in comparison to many other beach town in Southern California, the beaches in San Luis Obispo were open and the restaurants were available for outdoor dining.  We felt it was a win-win.  We were able to enjoy a summer family vacation while still being safe and coronavirus conscience.

On our way to our destination, we stopped in Calabasas/Thousand Oaks, California, to visit family.  We were able to spend Shabbat with Selma, the Vorobiof and Reisman families.  On Shabbat morning, we visited Selma at Sage Mountain.  As with most senior living facilities during the pandemic, Selma was on complete lock-down.  No one was able to visit her and she was unable to leave.  So, instead, we visited her from the patio below her window and through the glass paned doors.  We may not have been able to give her all of our love, but seeing her and saying hello was better than nothing.  After our Selma visit, we headed over to the Vorobiof home.  We spent the entire day relaxing outside enjoying their backyard.  We swam, played games, read, had amazing adult conversations, imbibed and ate.  We finished the day with an adult dinner out while the kids enjoyed more cousin time.
