Fall Break 2019 ~ Crown King

For the kids' fall break, we decided to take a road trip.  The U.S. Federal Land Management Agency has an initiative called "Every Kid in a Park".  This initiative allows every fourth grader (and their families) to visit national parks across the country for free.  So, we decided to make this the objective for fall break.  On our way to the Grand Canyon National Park and Zion National Park, we decided to stop at a couple of other Arizona experiences.

So, after Aiden's Saturday soccer game, we loaded up the car and departed for our first destination -- the Crown King Apple Festival.  Josh and I had never visited Crown King, AZ, so we thought this would be the iconic fall event to kick-off our trip.  What we didn't expect was the hour plus drive from the I-17 on very rough dirt roads!. Crown King is literally in the middle of no where.  And sadly, by the time that we made it to the festival, it was a ghost town and the event was shutting down.  Since we were there, we made the best of it and the kids did get an opportunity to bob for apples, eat a chocolate dipped apple, take a tractor ride and visit the firehouse.  The whole visit took less than an hour and then we had to get back into the car for the long trek back via the potted dirt road so we could get to our hotel in Williams, AZ.  It definitely was an experience that will not need repeating, but at least we tried something new.
